Winner for the APTN Aboriginal Day Live 2013 Flag Contest

The Aboriginal flag design prominently features a turtle, symbolizing longevity and the sacredness of the earth to Native peoples. The turtle’s shell, divided into quadrants of black, white, red, and yellow, represents the Medicine Wheel and signifies sacredness in all directions. Within the shell, various symbols depict key aspects of Native culture:

  • Canoe and Fish: Symbolize water activities, exploration, trade, and fishing.

  • Rattle and Feather Fan: Represent traditions and rituals used in ceremonies.

  • Totem Pole: Signifies tribes, families, and the transmission of stories.

  • Tipi: Reflects Native culture and heritage, providing a sense of comfort and protection.

The flag also features a sun on a yellow background and a moon on a blue background, representing the cycle of day and night and the interplay between land and water. The design underscores the importance of respecting and preserving Native history and culture as integral parts of our collective heritage.
